🍎 Röbäcksdalen 🍎

Hösten 2016 anlade vi den första kommersiella äppelodlingen i Västerbotten i modern tid och sannolikt en av världens nordligaste äppelodlingar.

Med hjälp från vårt lokalsamhälle, planterade vi ca 1 hektar med 1000 äppelträd på en jordbruksslätt i nära anslutning till Umeå Centrum. 55 olika sorter; ryska, finska och svenska äppelsorter på härdiga rotstockar helt dedikerade till vår isciderproduktion.

Om en vecka är det dags för årets skörd och vi ser så mycket fram emot att snart kunna presentera en iscider, helt gjord på äpplen från Västerbotten.

LANSERING BRÄNNLAND PLEX 2018

Idag kl. 10 lanserar vi Brännland Iscider PLEX 2018, den fjärde iscidern tillsammans med @petteralexis. Den har legat hela 60 månader på 500 liters Stockinger-fat och lanseras i Systembolagets sortiment Lokalt och Småskaligt.

Iscidern finns på hyllan i Umeå och Vännäs, samt går att beställa till samtliga butiker i landet.

MUTSU, även kallat vinterguld, är en korsning av

MUTSU, även kallat vinterguld, är en korsning av äppelsorterna Golden Delicious och den japanska sorten Indo. Mutsu togs fram 1930 vid Aomori äppelforskningsstation i Kuroishi. 19 år senare, 1949, registrerades sorten officiellt men introducerades inte i Sverige förrän 1970.

Mutsu är ett stort, gult äpple med fast fruktkött. Smaken är syrlig, samtidigt som den är aromatisk och söt. Mutsu är ett vinteräpple som blommar sent och mognar i slutet av oktober (i södra Sverige).

Mutsu är ryggraden i vår Apple Ice. I årgångarna 2020, 2021 och 2022 har vi använt 100% Mutsu, medan vi årgång 2023 valt att komplettera med en liten mängd av släktingen Golden Delicious, tack vare dess liknande egenskaper.

🍏 BRÄNNLAND APPLE ICE 2023 🍏

Lagom till sensommaren när man som bäst behöver ett lätt, lätt kylt vin, på terassen lanserar vi Apple Ice 2023. Den fjärde upplagan av vinet.

Första årgången av Apple Ice lanserades 2020, som en hommage till de fantastiska vinmakarna i Mosel och Rheingau. Då beskrev vi vinet som skir, balanserad och vild elegans. En beskrivning som fyra år senare fortfarande är aktuell.

Apple Ice 2023 finns i Systembolagets fasta sortiment med artikelnummer 73799. Lanseringen är ett årgångsbyte, från 2022, och sker löpande i Systembolagets butiker.

Barrique 2021 - 95 pts
On the nose, an intense bouquet with notes of dried apple, rhubarb and cassis, with hints of cocoa and floral nuances. A true explosion of flavour on the palate. Fresh, intense acidity paired with equally intense residual sweetness, with pineapple, citrus, apple and shortbread notes on the long, saline finish.

Brännland Iscider 2022 - 94 points
On the nose, a fresh, complex bouquet with notes of apple, caramel and quince. There are also hints of white flowers and spicy nuances. Crisp acidity on the palate that skilfully balances the intense sweetness. Fresh finish. Easy drinking style.

Apple Ice 2022 - 92 points
On the nose, aromas of fresh apple, citrus, exotic fruits, white flowers and a hint of liquorice. The palate is fresh, with distinctive sweetness and acidity and a long, balanced, saline mineral finish.

When Brännland Iscider started producing and selling ice cider in 2013 most people, from investors to distributors through to the Swedish monopoly retail told us not be disappointed if the initial surge of sales didn’t hold up.

“It’s sweet wine, and a sweet apple wine at that, and nobody drinks sweet wines anymore.”

True, the connotation of the word combinations “fruit wine” or “apple wine” aren’t of the kind normally associated with Tokaji (The wine that King Louis XIV described as “The King of wines, the wine of Kings.”) or Sauternes.

If you visit the “sweet fruit wine” shelf at the Swedish monopoly, where our products are placed, most of what you’ll find is more akin to Night Train than Chateau D’Yquem. Products more concerned perhaps with the maximum number of alcohol points combined matched to the minimum number of currency units spent rather than refined enjoyment, terroir, expression or legacy.

An apple ice wine at a price point equivalent to the finest grape based ice wines was not going to last.
“You’ll last six months at best”. Said the buyer/distributor/expert.

Sweet and Fruit. What they call a double fault in tennis. But we were lucky in the timing of our introduction. Swedish craft cider hadn’t been a thing for decades (if ever) and Swedish grape wines still failed to produce something ambitious which made the wine press hungry for something to write about. Our slightly megalomaniac attitude to what we did found an audience. First among a handful of wine journalists and sommeliers and then on to the early adopters…

Because ice cider uses apples the production chall

Because ice cider uses apples the production challenges are somewhat different to those of a grape ice wine. This changes the techniques applied.

Thankfully, the founding producers in Quebec province have defined what ice cider is and how it should be produced in the form of an official appellation. There is currently no such protection for ice cider in Europe and so naturally we take our cues from the Quebecois working in accordance largely to their definition.

Apples are larger than grapes and because of that they are difficult or impossible to press frozen (try it, I dare you). Whereas grapes are very often kept more or less whole at a few stages (or for the duration of) fermentation apples always have to be crushed to enable the winemaker to extract the liquid content of the fruit.

Because of that, to make ice cider production viable without compromising its deference to the specific terroir needed to produce true ice wines, the Quebecois have allowed two different ways of concentrating the natural sugar in apples to a level where the juice from those apples can be used to produce a sweet wine.

Cryoextraction
This method is very similar to the traditional method when pressing frozen grapes for ice wine. The apples are allowed to keep hanging on the tree after normal harvest time and through winter, ferreting and thawing continuously with the changing weather. This desiccates the fruit, concentrating its sugars as a result of water evaporating from it.

The fruit is then harvested and pressed when it is deemed at a satisfactory sugar level and the resultant juice fermented into an ice cider.

Cryoconcentration
Apples are harvested in autumn and placed in cold storage until the weather is cold enough to freeze the apple juice. The apples are pressed in early December (at least where we are located), the juice pumped into 1000 liter IBC-tanks and placed outside to freeze in the natural winter cold. We have regular temperatures of around -25 and as low as -40 centigrade and so making true ice cider is as of yet not a problem for us.
